At Onyx, we give you a legal voice by raising our arguments in what are often emotional disputes. As a reputable boutique family law and estate litigation firm based in the heart of Vancouver, we are creative legal counsel who solve complex problems. We are not afraid to advance novel arguments that will change the legal landscape to make the law better for everyone. We are known for our unique approach, grounded in our competency in both areas of family and estate law, which allows us to navigate the trickiest aspects of personal disputes competently and effectively. We achieve practical results using strategies that other lawyers simply don’t consider.
Our legal team has extensive experience having successfully handled a wide range of complex and emotionally charged cases. Our lead lawyers, Candace and Judith, have over 20 years of combined family law and estate law experience and have honed their expertise through years in practice. Candace began her legal career as a sole practitioner, while Judith has worked in various-sized law firms. Together, they bring a diverse range of legal perspectives and insights to every case they handle.
Onyx is a diverse group of lawyers and paralegals ranging in differing life and legal experience. Our legal team works together to give you a high quality of service while offering competitive pricing and flexible billing methods.
Bottom line: We are here for you. Give us your legal burdens, and we will take care of them.
We have a personal passion for justice. Candace and Judith were both raised and educated on the east side of Vancouver. We each pursued careers in law before joining forces: Candace as a sole practitioner and Judith in various-sized law firms. We joined forces in 2012 and since then, we’ve assembled a team of like-minded lawyers who dig deep to find creative solutions to complex conflicts.
Our namesake is the Onyx gemstone which is known for its ability to heal sorrow and grief. It was worn to diffuse tension and defend against negativity by fortifying self-confidence and sharpening the senses. By calling ourselves Onyx, what we’re saying is simple – we will support you, build your confidence and defend you.
By dedicating ourselves to the niche areas of estate and family law, we’ve built a level of competence, detailed knowledge, and experience that you won’t find elsewhere. Our lawyers specialize in finding creative approaches to even your most complex and troubling personal legal situations.
We speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian and can cater for other languages like French and Spanish. If you need help with legal translations, we have partners we use to support additional language requirements.
We know our clients are under stress, which is why we commit to finding a fair and just result tailored to each client’s needs. We prepare for trial, but are attuned to opportunities for early resolution.
Choosing your lawyer doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. We offer a free 30-minute consultation where we get to know you and your situation, and see how we can help. That way, you can make sure our law firm is the right fit for you.
After we get to know you and your legal circumstances, we can recommend a process that is best suited for you to resolve your particular family law issues. Often, mediation or collaborative law processes will efficiently and effectively bring a settlement together without the need for expensive and stressful court appearances. Sometimes a legal problem resists easy resolution and there is no good option other than enlisting the assistance of the court to resolve matters. We find that often it is a combination of court processes and out of court negotiations that finally bring a resolution to a heated dispute. Whatever process is involved, our family lawyers can advocate strenuously for you so that your voice is heard and your legal rights are protected.
That’s why we try to be flexible and offer different payment methods to better serve your needs.
