Working at Onyx Law Group

Onyx Law Group · Vancouver, British Columbia

This video is a look inside Onyx Law Group as a place to work. Our lawyers describe the culture they have built in Vancouver: a warm, collegial team that supports and mentors each other while doing serious work in family, estate, and trust litigation.

The firm runs every litigation file on two tracks at once, settlement and trial, and puts real weight on mentorship, including keeping women in the practice of law throughout their careers. If that environment sounds like a fit, the transcript below gives a fuller sense of how the team thinks about its work and its people.

Onyx Law Group and the lawyers here will get you to the finish line. We’ll resolve your matter for you. We’ll choose the best process, the most appropriate process, the one that is the most likely to bring you to the place where you can get on with your life. At Onyx, we aim to create a warm and collegial environment for people to work at. We affectionately call it the Onyx family. We love to support and mentor each other. We have each other’s back, and it’s a place where we can laugh, work hard together towards common goals, and make a difference together.

We are simultaneously settlement counsel and trial lawyers, so when there’s any litigation file that comes across, we are always keeping a keen eye on the two different tracks of litigation and settlement, and how they’re going, and seeing how they’re interacting, and seeing when is the best opportunity to make a deal, or when is it better to push forward strategically in the litigation in order to get the better deal later on. We commence claims or defend claims that go to court regarding any estates or trust issue that arises, and we also resolve claims dealing with those legal issues. So you have people from all walks of life who you are representing as well, and so there’s a real human aspect to this type of litigation. People can be fearful of that process, but it’s something we’re very comfortable with. We do it regularly, and we won’t hesitate to advance your interests if it does come to court. We’re very adept and comfortable with doing both tracks and assisting you to resolve your problems, whatever tool we need to use to do that.

I’m very passionate about keeping women in the practice of law. It is difficult, but it’s not impossible to juggle your personal life and your professional aspirations, and if I could be known for one thing in my practice of law, it was that I encouraged and helped women along the way to stay in the practice of law for all of their careers. Candace and I have been together in one form or the other since she was an articling student, and we practiced at the same law firm together. I was her official mentor and principal, and so she calls me her mother-in-law and she is my daughter-in-law, and it still rings true now. We love and support each other, and we also support each other personally, and it’s just a blessing to be able to practice in the same office and build Onyx with her. If you’re looking for somebody who knows what they’re doing, if you’re looking for somebody who’s able to obtain the maximum value for your claim, if you’re looking for somebody who’s going to be kind and respectful of your needs, then you should go with Onyx. If you go to the website, there’s an information field where you can just pop in a message that you’re interested in having a chat with us. You can set up an initial intake with our front office, and we’ll be happy to chat with you and point you in the right direction.
