Spouses often name each other, with a trusted adult child as the alternate. Some parents name all their children as co-executors, and people with large or complex estates may choose a trust company or a law firm. Family, friends, trust companies and law firms can all act, so ask your lawyer whether they take on executor work.

Who can I appoint as my executor? Usually spouses will appoint each other as their executors and then they will appoint an alternate. If they have adult children, they may appoint a trusted, responsible adult child as their alternate executor. Oftentimes parents will appoint all of their children as co-executors. I don’t personally recommend it, but you know, that’s what they want to do. And other times, if an estate is, the parents or the individual anticipates the estate to be a large, complicated estate because they own corporations and assets all over the world, they may appoint a professional corporate trustee or executor to administer their estate, and some people will appoint their law firm or their lawyer.

Not all lawyers and law firm are want to do this work and and it’s something that they can ask their lawyer or their law firm if that’s something that they do but family members, friends, trusted individuals, corporate trust companies and law firms can all act if that’s something that you want to discuss with them.
